On Tuesday, March 2, the Aggies will greet one of their own,  as former Aggie football great,  Zane Newton and his wife, Kandy return to campus to kickoff a whole week’s worth of activities.   The Newtons have spent their entire married life involved in ministry to young people. Zane boasts  more than thirty years and he and Kandy have recorded 28 years of their marriage devoted to spreading the Word.
Zane came to OPSU from Spearman, Texas, in 1979 and was a standout performer on both sides of the football during one of the best eras of Aggie football, 1979-82. During his time in Goodwell, the Aggies put up a record of 28-13 including a 9-1, 1981 season and national playoff loss and a Sunflower Bowl appearance in 1982. Through three of those season , current Aggie head football coach, Mike Wyatt was an assistant coach for the Aggies, as well.
“Zane was always an inspirational player. He worked hard and inspired his teammates to work hard and did so with a strong Christian ethic. He has put that same work ethic into his ministry.” Stated Wyatt.

For the Aggie Football Team, the highlight of the week will be Zane and Kandy speaking to those attending the annual Fellowship of Athletes Retreat . This has become an annual event hosted by Camp Gibson near Hardesty. It provides a great opportunity for team members to come together and share their faith with each other and to hear from one of their own, Zane Newton.
“Zane has walked the same hallways and performed on the same fields of glory as our current players. He did so at a level that caught the eye of the Seattle Seahawks upon his graduation. He knows what it takes to perform at the highest level. He also knows what it took to turn the program around from an unsuccessful team to a powerhouse. Everyone will benefit from hearing him speak.” Stated Aggie head football coach Mike Wyatt.
Zane has delivered the chapel service many prominent college football teams, while Kandy has been the team chaplain for the Oral Roberts University Women’s Basketball Team.
