Another week, another over-time football game for the OPSU Aggie gridders. This time, the team fell to the University of the Incarnate Word by a 38-35 margin in one overtime period.
The Aggies after leading 21-7 at intermission behind the hard running of sophomore tailback, Darryl Brister upped the total to 35-7 with a little more than 8 minutes to go in the 3rd quarter. Both 3rd quarter scores came off ICW turnovers.
“We pretty much went into ‘coast mode’, from a mental standpoint. We just didn’t handle prosperity very well. However, I don’t want to diminish the effort of Incarnate Word. They decided that the game wasn’t over and roared back.” Stated Aggie head football coach Mike Wyatt.
The Aggies who moved the ball pretty much at will found the going tough in the fourth quarter and could not mount a drive.
“We couldn’t buy a first down in the fourth quarter, when in reality, about 3 first downs would have won us the game.” Added Wyatt.
There was no one real area to blame the loss on. At times, each phase of the team looked great, but also looked awful.
“We had some great plays on offense, then couldn’t move it at all. We had some 3 and out stops on defense, then couldn’t tackle when we needed to. We had some great moments in the kicking game, but had some equally bad moments. We just cannot achieve a level of consistent play.” Wyatt noted.
After moving to the 11 yard line in overtime, the Aggies were hit with a holding penalty that moved them back to the 21 yard line. Then a 2 yard loss pushed the team back to the 23. The third down saw Aggie quarterback Vinnie Gay hit Tyler Northcutt in the endzone for an apparent touchdown only to see the ball come loose as Northcutt hit the ground. Then, the 38 yard field goal attempt went wide left.
Incarnate Word found the going tough in their attempt to take control of the game, but after 3 attempts had only netted less than 3 yards, the Cardinals hit on a 39 yard field goal to seal their victory.
This week, the Aggies move on to face Southwestern College of Winfield, Kansas, in their 2009 homecoming event. The game will mark part of the celebration of OPSU’s 100th anniversary, as well as the 90th anniversary of OPSU football.
During pre-game warm-up, the Aggies will wear replica leather helmets and throw-back jerseys during the entire game.
“It should be fun to wear the throwback jerseys and leather helmets. This will be our on small way of honoring the past.” Stated Wyatt.
The Moundbuilders come into the game seeking their first. They have been battling opponents in their Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference with hopes that the trip to Goodwell will move them into the “win” column.
Game time is set for 1 PM and according to current weather reports, a chill should be in the air as temperatures are expected to only hit a high of 39 degrees for the day.
