2007 Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow from the University of Florida has received a lot of attention for his Christian witness and his mission trips to the Philippines during breaks from his educational pursuits. But, here, at OPSU we have our own gridder who gives up portions of his breaks to work in missions outside the country, as well. Austin Cleland, a junior offensive lineman for the Aggies who hails from Alvin, Texas, has gone on five mission trips into Mexico with his church over the past three years.
As recently as Christmas break, Austin traveled with his church to Galena, Mexico, to help share his faith with the people, there, as well as in Cueves and Madronia. His church, First United Methodist Church of Alvin, joined with Plain Gospel Ministries of San Juan, Texas, to help spread Christmas cheer and enrich the lives of the people who live in those communities.
Austin also spent part of his Christmas break from college handing out meals to the needy in his hometown of Alvin through the “Love Out Loud” program
A senior with the Aggies in the fall, Austin looks to work as a Youth Minister upon his graduation from OPSU. He is currently serving an internship at the OPSU Methodist Student Center and is also active in the OPSU Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He has elected to spend part of his summer as a counselor at Camp Wow, a church camp in Stewart, Oklahoma, as well.
