Spaghetti and Footballs

Long before John Grissom had penned his novel "Playing for Pizza", Gregg Thelen was throwing footballs around in the NFL Italy. Thelen who had been a star quarterback for the Racine Raiders Semi-pro team in Racine, Wisconsin had crossed the big pond to play for the Aquile Ferrara coached by current Aggie Head Football Coach Mike Wyatt.

Thelen had been a juco star Triton College in Illinois before transferring to Northern Michigan University. He had played 6 seasons with Racine Raiders and had spent two years in England playing professionally for the Leeds Cougars before getting the call from Coach Wyatt.

In Ferrara, Italy, Thelen teamed with former UW-Stout wide receiver Mark Rothwell to set the NFL Italy on fire. Under his direction, Thelen guided the Aquile (Eagles in Italian) to the semi-finals before falling to the eventual champion Pharones Milano (Milan Pharaohs) by a score of 40-32. During that campaign, Thelen passed for oveer 4800 yards and over 40 touchdowns.

Thelen links up again with his former boss when he takes the field as one of the camp staff members for the Hi Plains Passing Camp which runs June 8-11 at OPSU.

"It is great to have Gregg around. He is such a good teacher and coach and is a much sought after camp instructor and clinic speaker. We are lucky to have him work with the guys who are attending our camp." stated Mike Wyatt about his former player.

"This is a small camp in numbers, but we intend to give the kids excellent instruction for their money. We hope they will take something away from here that will make them better football players for their respective high school teams." added Wyatt.
